Not all stucco cracks are the same problem. A hairline crack in a freshly-applied stucco wall is normal shrinkage. A stair-step crack propagating from a corner is a movement warning. A network of fine cracks all over a wall is a workmanship failure. Each type has a different cause and a different fix — and getting the diagnosis wrong is how homeowners end up making stucco damage worse.
The Six Types of Stucco Cracks
Walk your stucco walls and match what you see to one of these six patterns.
Fine cracks under 1mm wide, often barely visible except in raking light. Usually shrinkage as the stucco cured. Cosmetic in most cases — monitor but rarely urgent.
A network of fine cracks covering a wall area. Usually indicates the stucco was applied too thin, cured too fast, or over inadequate substrate prep. Workmanship failure — often needs a whole panel refinished.
Cracks running diagonally from corners of windows and doors. Almost always structural movement — foundation settlement, framing shrinkage, or lintel deflection. Fix the movement source before repairing the crack.
Cracks running horizontally along a wall, often at floor lines or shelf angles. Usually thermal movement or a shelf angle that has rusted and expanded (oxide jacking). Investigate before repairing.
Straight vertical cracks running the height of a wall. Usually missing or failed expansion joints — the wall has nowhere to accommodate thermal movement so it cracks the stucco instead.
Any crack showing efflorescence, rust bleed, or damp staining is actively conducting water into the wall assembly. Urgent — water behind stucco causes cascading damage to insulation, framing, and interior finishes.
Which Cracks Are Urgent?
- Any crack wider than 1mm (roughly the width of a credit card edge)
- Any crack showing water staining, efflorescence, or rust bleed
- Cracks that visibly widen year over year
- Any crack combined with soft, hollow, or bulging stucco
- Diagonal cracks propagating from corners of windows or doors
Hairline cracks under 1mm with no water intrusion can go on a monitoring list. Note them with a photo and a date, and check again next spring. If they haven't moved, they were shrinkage — leave them alone or seal them cosmetically at your next painting cycle.
How to Repair Small Cracks (Under 3mm)
- Widen the crack slightly. Run a masonry chisel or a triangular scraper along the crack to open it into a small V-groove. This gives the patching compound something to grip.
- Clean out dust and loose material. Wire brush the crack, then blow it out or brush it clean.
- Dampen the surface. Mist with water so the surrounding stucco doesn't suck moisture out of your patch too fast.
- Fill with acrylic-modified stucco patch. Push it into the V-groove with a putty knife. Overfill slightly, then trowel flush.
- Match the texture. Use a sponge, brush, or the technique appropriate for your stucco finish (float, dash, sand, etc.). Texture matching is the difference between a nearly-invisible repair and a very-visible patch.
- Keep damp for 24 hours. Mist as needed to slow the cure.
How to Repair Larger Cracks and Damaged Areas
Cracks wider than 3mm, or areas where stucco has come off, need more than a patch fill. The process:
- Chip out all damaged and loosely-bonded stucco back to sound material
- Expose and inspect the underlying lath and water-resistive barrier — replace anything damaged or rusted
- Reinstall lath if needed
- Apply a scratch coat, then a brown coat, then a matched finish coat
- Blend the texture into the surrounding wall as best possible
This is skill-intensive work — the substrate inspection and lath repair are the parts that matter most for long-term durability, and they're easy to skip if you don't know what you're looking at. For anything more than a small crack fill, hire a professional stucco contractor.

Cold-climate stucco takes more punishment than stucco anywhere else in Canada. Three factors dominate:
- Freeze-thaw cycling. 40–80 events per year on the Prairies. Water in hairline cracks freezes, expands 9%, and pries the crack wider every cycle.
- Thermal movement. Wall temperature swings from -40°C to +35°C. Standard cement stucco doesn't have the flexibility to accommodate that range — polymer-modified stucco does.
- Wind-driven precipitation. Prairie wind at 50–80 km/h drives moisture deep into any crack it finds.
This is why polymer-modified stucco is worth the modest extra cost in a cold climate. It has 200–300% more flexibility than plain cement stucco, and it resists freeze-thaw crack propagation dramatically better.
When to Repair vs When to Refinish
Spot-repair up to 3–4 cracks or damaged areas per wall. Beyond that, refinishing the whole panel gives a better-looking, longer-lasting result than trying to blend a dozen patches into an old stucco surface.
