Every brick home reaches a point where the mortar between the bricks stops doing its job. In a cold climate, that's usually somewhere around 40–60 years after the wall was built. When it happens, the answer is tuckpointing — the process of cutting out the old mortar and replacing it with new. Done right, tuckpointing gives a brick wall another 20–30 years of weathertight life. Done wrong, it accelerates brick damage. This guide explains the difference.
What Is Tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between bricks and packing in fresh mortar. The bricks themselves stay in place — only the mortar joints get replaced.
The word originally referred to a specific 18th-century decorative technique where a light-coloured mortar was used to imitate expensive rubbed brick, with a thin ribbon of contrasting mortar “tucked” into the joint for a fine linear appearance. Almost nobody uses the term in that historical sense any more — today “tuckpointing” and “repointing” mean the same thing: renewing mortar joints.
Tuckpointing is grinding out old mortar between bricks and packing in new mortar to restore weatherproofing and structural integrity.
Why Brick Mortar Fails
Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial layer between bricks — it's meant to fail before the brick does, because mortar is much easier and cheaper to replace than brick. But once mortar loses its structural strength, your wall stops being weathertight, and every subsequent rain and freeze-thaw cycle pushes damage deeper into the assembly.
- Age. Portland cement mortars from the 1960s–80s have a 40–60 year functional lifespan in a cold climate. Once past that, deterioration accelerates.
- Freeze-thaw cycling. Water penetrates hairline cracks, freezes, expands 9%, and pries the joint wider. Cold climates cycle this dozens of times per year.
- Wrong mortar hardness. A previous repair using modern hard Portland cement on soft heritage brick causes the brick face to spall before the harder mortar fails — accelerating overall damage.
- Water management failures. Missing drip caps, blocked weep holes, or poor flashing let water sluice down the wall face and pool in the joints.
How Do You Know When You Need Tuckpointing?
Walk your brick walls and look for:
- Mortar that feels sandy or powdery when you rub a finger across it
- Joints recessed more than 6mm (¼ inch) back from the brick face
- Visible gaps between bricks
- Loose bricks that wobble under hand pressure
- White efflorescence blooming on the brick face
- Mortar dust collecting at the base of the wall
- Interior damp spots or musty smells on the inside of an exterior brick wall
Any of those signs means the mortar has lost enough of its function that water is getting into the wall assembly. How Professional Tuckpointing Is Done
Professional tuckpointing starts with matching the existing mortar — hardness, colour, aggregate. Wrong hardness damages soft brick. Wrong colour looks obviously patched.
Old mortar is ground out to a minimum depth of ¾ inch (roughly 2× the joint width). Skim-coating over the surface without proper depth is the #1 way tuckpointing fails within a few seasons.
The prepared joint is blown clean of dust and lightly dampened. Dry brick sucks water out of fresh mortar too fast and produces a weak bond.
Fresh matched mortar is packed firmly into the joint in two lifts, not one thick fill. Each lift is tooled to compress the mortar and force out air pockets.
The finished joint is tooled to match the original profile — concave, weathered, flush, or raked. Wrong profile looks obviously repaired even from a distance.
Fresh mortar is kept damp for the first 24–72 hours so it cures slowly and develops full strength. Fast-curing mortar is chalky and weak — a common issue when tuckpointing is done in hot dry weather without proper curing.
Mortar Matching: Why It Matters More Than Anything
This is the part most homeowners don't know about, and it's the single biggest factor in whether a tuckpointing job lasts 30 years or 3.
Modern high-Portland cement mortars are much harder than the lime-based mortars used on brick homes built before roughly 1930. If you use a modern hard mortar on a heritage soft brick, the mortar becomes stronger than the brick — and thermal movement then cracks the brick face instead of the mortar. You've destroyed the sacrificial-mortar principle that keeps brick walls weathertight.

How Long Does Tuckpointing Last?
A professionally-done tuckpointing job with properly matched mortar, adequate joint prep depth (¾ inch minimum), and quality workmanship typically lasts 20–30 years in a cold climate. Bad tuckpointing — wrong mortar, shallow prep, skim-coating over the surface — can fail within a few seasons.

Tuckpointing vs Brick Replacement
Tuckpointing only addresses the mortar. If the bricks themselves are cracked, spalled, or falling apart, no amount of tuckpointing will restore that wall — you need brick replacement in addition to tuckpointing.
A good masonry contractor will do both together where needed: cut out and replace damaged bricks with matched replacements, then tuckpoint all the joints in the same visit. Doing tuckpointing first and then having to come back for brick replacement wastes your money.
Can I Tuckpoint My Own House?
Small isolated areas of soft mortar on a ground-level wall are potentially a DIY project if you get the technique right. But there are three parts most homeowners get wrong:
- Joint prep depth. You need to grind out to ¾ inch minimum. That's hard, dusty, precision work that's easy to short-cut.
- Mortar matching. Getting hardness and colour right is a genuine skill. Wrong mortar hardness will damage your brick over time.
- Joint profile tooling. Matching the existing profile is easy to see if done wrong. Bad tooling looks obviously patched.
For chimneys, second-storey walls, heritage homes, or widespread joint failure, always hire a professional tuckpointing contractor. Chimneys in particular need special care — they're at height, exposed on all four sides, and use different mortar formulations than wall tuckpointing.
